Oh Louise A girl from down on Swago Crick A graveyard full of family And a forest full of chestnut trees Oh where’d the days go Go find me the old thorn broom Or the worn wooden peg from the days of my youth The poet knows no greater truth Milkweed Ladies so fair and fine, Won’t you have a sip of my columbine? Or a thimble of my thimbleberry wine? Signs and portents A great fireball in the sky The roads came in and the trouble with them Is that they only make the time fly by Westward from death Tell me ‘bout the Old Sea Chest And when the chestnuts died and The Bonnie caught fire Did you smell the smoke in your dancing dress? Life everlasting Is what your Granny gave to you And the whole wide world or a rocky old farm Way down on Swago Crick Oh Louise, oh Louise, oh Louise Milkweed Ladies so fair and fine, Won’t you have a sip of my columbine? Or a thimble of my thimbleberry wine?

Oh take my hands and put them to work Holding up the crumbling mountains And take my hair to soak up the rain Washing down the mouth of this holler What is the color of a burning ember? It’s as black as the coal they harvest from the hill And as it’s orange as the trees in autumn Red like the thunder beating under my breast Oh my chest is full of this fire Strong are the roots made of iron I was born in this place and so was my child We grew up drinking spring water Till the slurry soaked in, seeped through our skin Sacrificed for the mighty dollar I fight for mountaintops and the life of my daughter May she grow like a flower on the towering ridge Green, and vibrant purple May her roots run deep as ironweed Keeping the mountains free

The winter sun shines on me The stark beauty of the sea Of golden grass no longer green Oh winter sun, shine on me The frosty wind stills my bones But yet my skin, it trembles No quilt can save me from the cold Of frosty wind that stills my bones The fresh-laid tracks in winter snow Of white-tailed deer and sparrow Oh can you lead me safely home The fresh-laid tracks in winter snow These early nights, the stars I see Though close to earth, I’m tethered Just as you once were close to me These early nights, the stars I see The winter sun shines on me The stark beauty of the sea Of golden grass no longer green Oh winter sun, shine on me

You turned up like the leaves before the rain Before the thunder and lightning came Set my heart ablaze like those golden summer days I’ll be here when you return again I’ll be here when the night turns to morning I’ll be here when the winter gets too cold I’ll be here when you’re alone and you need a hand to hold I’ll be here when you return again Sometimes I fly like a bird in the blue sky Sometimes I hold to the earth like a stone I’ll say that I’m doing fine, but I’m so lonesome I could cry But I’ll be here when you return again
5.
If only the highways Went around the mountainsides If only the backroads Would all take their time If I left this morning And got there tonight A drink and a slow dance And I’d feel alright Lay me down where the ginseng grows Let me know you’ll keep me when the cold wind blows ‘Cause I need a place to grow old, someday If I stayed a long time Would you still treat me kind Or if I took to ramblin’ Would you let me change my mind ‘Cause at the end of the day I’ll rest my weary bones Right next to yours And I’ll never be alone Lay me down where the ginseng grows Let me know you’ll keep me when the cold wind blows ‘Cause I need a place to grow old A place where my roots grow old I need a place to grow old, someday

about

These songs are all deeply connected to place, specifically West Virginia. I love exploring the ways people connect with their homeland through music, from WV poet laureate Louise McNeill, to the women activists fighting against mountaintop removal, to my own reflections on what it means to be of this place. It's something that's very hard to define with words. It's just something you know, something as old and familiar as a story your grandpa tells the same way every time, and as alive as a sugar maple in the fall. "A Place to Grow Old" tries to capture a small taste of this.
